SOLUTIONS FOR STRESSED TREES Many trees can tolerate the poorest conditions in which to grow coping with soils low in nutrients and organic material but occasionally a mature tree will start to show signs of stress. This can often follow disruption to roots, by compaction or other physical damage or stress for example on development sites or simply through lack of water. And as with all plants the answer truly lies in the soil. If the conditions for growth are optimised even mature specimen trees can recover. CASE STUDY: Problem: Beech tree in a rear garden in Cardiff , which was showing clear signs of stress, with depleted foliage of a very small size and the death of branch growth tips. The soil was observed as heavy, poorly drained clay and the area immediately beneath the tree was lawn. Solution: Improve drainage and increase availability of nutrients to tree. Method: Inject surrounding soil with
compressed air to open up soil and allow free drainage
